August is the month that a lot of people remember Bay Area Music legend Jerry Garcia. He was born in San Francisco on August 1, 1942 and he died in Marin on August 9, 1995 at the age of only 53 years old. One of the founders of the Grateful Dead, Jerry’s distinctive guitar style earned him a place on Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” ranking him number 46.
For August, 2016, BAMmagazine.com has put together a special tribute to the late great musician and songwriter Jerry Garcia. It includes a special digital reprint of BAM’s original cover story that was published shortly after Jerry’s passing and contains memories and anecdotes from Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan, Sammy Hagar, President Bill Clinton, and many others. Our Jerry Garcia tribute also has a rare audio interview that Jerry did after a “Day On The Green” concert at the Oakland Coliseum in 1974 with our own Kenny Wardell when he worked at KSAN Jive 95. We also dug up interviews we did with Grateful Dead photographer Jay Blakesberg, the Dead’s archivist Nicholas Meriweather, and the Grateful Dead Hour’s DJ David Gans.
