Two of the Bay Area Music Community's Adopted Sons Releasing New Albums and On Tour With Their Bands In 2012

The LobsterAmong the names the Bay Area can claim on the list in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as being adopted early by our radio stations and listeners are Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.

The family of “The Boss” moved to San Mateo when his Dad retired, with Bruce staying in Asbury Park, New Jersey to keep working on his Rock & Roll dream. Plus we gave lots of airplay to his early albums, before the breakout of “Born To Run.” Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers had only sold 21, 000 copies of their eponymous debut, and 18,000 were in the SF Bay Area and Boston. Your Crustacean / DJ was the first to interview Tom, who showed up after their soundcheck before their first Bay Area shows at my 6-10pm show at KSJO, San Jose. Wish I had a tape...but we didn’t think we were making Rock History at the time, we were just having fun. “Breakdown” wasn’t a hit yet, and TP and the Heartbreakers couldn’t even get a gig in San Francisco. They played the Keystones in Palo Alto and Berkeley. It was February 15th, 1977. I still have the copy of their first album that we used that day, complete with playlist sheet taped to the front of the album with the songs we played marked off. Both Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are going on tour in 2012 in support of new releases. The first song from The Boss is “We Take Care Of Our Own Business” from Wrecking Ball, due March 6th. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour starts in Atlanta on March 18th. They’ll play the HP Pavilion in San Jose on April 24th. Tickets go on sale February 3rd. You can listen to the song and get the full 411 at http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/index.html Both acts will tour in Europe in the Spring and Summer. TP and the boys hit the road with their first show at in Broomfield (Denver), Colorado on April 19th. More info at http://www.tompetty.com/ - No Bay Area dates or a release date or title for their new album at the time of blogging, but I can share something with you from the early days

Here’s a Lobster Archive exclusive. Digitized by Flow Communications, San Francisco. Recorded at Tom Petty and The Heartbreaker’s first gig in San Francisco at the Old Waldorf. They played two sets that night. Check out “Breakdown” — June 29, 1978 — in a tight little club above Battery Street in The City.

There will be some great rockin' in the Bay Area this year and I can't wait!
