Blind Pig Records, a San Francisco Jewel

Based in San Francisco with an office in Chicago, it is one of the coolest labels around, producing over 150 albums since its inception, with artists ranging from Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and James Cotton to Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and Jeremy Spencer of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Their biggest selling CD–and one of the coolest–is the Buddy Guy and Junior Wells album, Drinkin’ TNT ‘n’ Smokin’ Dynamite.

What makes Blind Pig a San Francisco jewel is the number of local acts they have signed and continue to work with. The list is awesome: Tommy Castro, Roy Rogers, Kenny Neal, Norton Buffalo, Charlie Musselwhite, Elvin Bishop, and John Nemeth, to name a few.

What is evident on all Blind Pig releases is the their integrity and attention to detail. San Jose native Tommy Castro won the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year for Blues Music in 2011. His song "The Girl Can’t Help It" on Blind Pig’s The Essential Tommy Castro smokes from beginning to end.

Two of their newest releases are local artists. Guitarist/producer Roy Rogers and keyboardist Ray Manzarek (of The Doors) have teamed up for their second release, Translucent Blues. My favorite song is "Game of Skill." The whole CD has a funky roadhouse vibe to it. John Nemeth’s Name the Day showcases his high powered vocals, more soul than blues. Amazing stuff!

Craig Chaquico’s (Jefferson Starship) new CD will be released early next year.

This is one of the coolest sources of blues/roots music you can find. I am proud to have done many CD covers for them. Some of my favorite music is the blues. Hell, my dog Smokey’s full name is "Smokestack Lighting"!
