Isaak, 55, was clearly enjoying himself at the American roots music gathering that attracted, by some estimates, 600,000 people over the weekend. It sure didn’t hurt that Chris is releasing a brand new CD, his first for Vanguard Records, “Beyond the Sun” on October 18 that is chuck-full of the music that he grew up on in Stockton, CA- 1950’s rock and roll roots classics. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and let’s face it, this is the music Chris Isaak was born to sing.

“Beyond the Sun” was recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, the same studio where Elvis recorded some of his earliest music including “That’s All Right.” He is joined by his longtime band- drummer Kenney Dale Johnson, bass player Rowland Salley, who have been there since the beginning in 1984, guitarist Hershel Yatovitz, pianist Scott Plunkett, and percussionist Rafael Padilla.

The weather in Golden Gate Park for Isaak’s set at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass on Friday lived up to the title of his new CD. The music was perfect on a perfect San Francisco Day. Chris yelled out to the crowd, “Hey, can we do this every year?”
