For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters
Mud Morganfield & Kim Wilson
Rating : 4 1/2 Guitars out of 5
On this new CD release, Mud Morganfield pays tribute and shows love to his father, legendary blues artist Muddy Waters. Listening to the Mud Morganfield and Kim Wilson CD, For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters, I was impressed with the energy of the first track, “Gone to Main Street.” Mud’s deep bluesy vocals are richly supported with a solid band, featuring Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds on harmonica.
While reading the album notes, I discover the band had had a house party the night before the recording, with plenty of good food, family, and friends. No wonder they came out swinging the next day for the recording sessions. Clearly, you can’t underestimate the Power of Home Cooking. The aforementioned first track, “Gone to Main Street” with Mud’s killer vocals, is one of my favorite songs here.
During Muddy’s stellar career, he recorded many hit songs written by another blues icon, the late great Willie Dixon. Mr. Dixon’s world-famous songwriting skills are well represented with four compositions on this compact disc: “I Want To Be Loved,” “ I Don’t Know Why,” ” I Love the Life I Live,” and the forever popular “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” While not all of the songs covered are among Muddy Waters’ big hits, they are familiar to any serious blues fan. Mud Morganfield’s vocals are infused with the depth and feeling that bring authentic conviction to this collection of songs first recorded by his distinguished dad. I’m sure Muddy himself and blues people everywhere will enjoy this tribute to one of the undisputed icons of American music. Muddy Waters’ timeless legacy of outstanding blues music is alive and well; it continues with his son, Mud Morganfield.
