September 18, 2018 CBS News reported the following:
Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts is in “critical but stable” condition after slipping and cracking his head while playing with the family dog in Florida. Betts’ Twitter account says that all of his tour dates have been postponed.
The Dickey Betts website says the “Ramblin’ Man” singer-songwriter has been sedated since the accident Monday evening in Sarasota.
The website says Betts is scheduled to have surgery Friday to relieve swelling in the brain.
His wife, Donna Betts, said on the website that she and his children are by his side and that the family “appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time.”
UPDATE: Bay Area singer-guitarist Frank Hannon recently spoke with Dave Taylor of 106.9 The Fox about how the Allman Brother’s veteran is doing.
“I just flew out from Florida. I just saw Dickey a couple days ago and he’s on the mend. You know, he survived a head injury that was very traumatic, and the guy’s a fighter man. Dickey Betts is a survivor. He’s survived so many ups and downs and tragedies with the Allman Brothers and you know, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s back on stage here in a couple months. I mean he’s just such a great guy and a great fighter, and I love him dearly.”
Frank also discussed how his father-in-law encouraged him to challenge himself musically on his latest album “From one place…to Another, Vol. 2“.
“So what I did was I challenged myself to learn some songs and it was Dickey that suggested to me that I learn some different styles to develop my singing voice. And I covered everything on here from Seal to Aerosmith to Jimi Hendrix and my latest single is ‘Hush’ and it’s coming out now. We recorded it with guitars instead of keyboards and it’s got my very good friend Randy Hansen playing lead guitar on it. He’s a Jimi Hendrix tribute artist and I’m just really proud of the song and the video comes out this week. It’s a great song and the album is my challenge to myself to sings lead vocals.”
