Wow, what a nice spot! I’d been hearing so much about this place from so many people that it was great to finally get the chance to experience it up close and personal.
I performed on their very cool and funky little stage with a new local group called Diego’s Workshop. This band is made up of some great local musicians, some of whom I have played with in the past. It was so much fun as we played with one vocalist after another and a handful of incredibly talented rappers, all of them with very diverse styles. I was called upon to improvise almost every funky back beat pattern in my repertoire in support of their awesome melodies. The band was totally in sync as we played with passion and delight for three fun-filled sets. I’m looking forward to doing more with this wonderful lineup of outstanding musicians and will keep you informed of the next gig.
Disco Volante is a very unique restaurant/bar/live venue combination, located at the corner of 14th & Webster. The nicely renovated historical building is decorated with funky stained glasswork, and features inviting views of the Tribune Building. The handcrafted woodwork throughout the building and around the bar is beautiful; as a retired carpenter, I can truly appreciate the workmanship. There are comfortable high-backed booth in back, and a very cool kinda VIP upstairs area where you can sit and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the live entertainment below. The drinks menu offers some fun house-named drinks, along with a nice variety of mostly local beers, ales and IPAs. The food menu is also tasty, so be sure to check out Disco Volante very soon.
On a somewhat different note, many in the music community are concerned about the recent removal of the Latin Jazz category, as well as some other changes, that will affect the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 12. The changes have many of us hard-working musicians in all musical genres up in arms. Here is some information that I found to be very informative. Please pass it on, as knowledge is power! So stand up for our creative rights and recognition for all of our musical arts.
Stay true to your self and in sharing your sincerity to supporting the venue. We should all remember to never forget that without the venue, we have no place to share our true passion…our music!
Stay tuned, as there will be more to come. Peace.
