KSAN Jive 95 Reunion Concert Will Benefit California Historical Radio Society

KSAN Jive 95 (called that because the station’s frequency was actually 94.9 FM, so the “95” was a bit of a jive) has been named the 2014 “Legendary Radio Station” of the year by the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame (BARHOF). There will be a KSAN Reunion Concert and special Broadcast Legends lunch to celebrate, with a number of KSAN alumni from that era expected to attend.

KSAN Jive 95 was born after San Francisco’s Summer of Love (1967) and in the middle of the Vietnam war.  The period from 1968 through 1978 fueled the flames of creative freedom on the airwaves and produced some of the most incredible, inspiring, outrageous radio ever broadcast. Deejay/visionary Tom “Big Daddy” Donahue led a motley crew of radio pioneers who brought a new sound to the airways: freeform rock, long album cuts (rather than merely Top 40 singles), new artists, and no-holds-barred commentary and news reporting. The station was the voice of a new generation of free-thinkers and an outlet for a large community of  musicians. Legendary from its first moments on-air, KSAN inspired other FM radio stations across the country.

The featured artists will be Big Brother & the Holding Company, Country Joe McDonald, and Cold Blood with Lydia Pense. Special guests include vocalist Rick Stevens (Tower of Power), the Imperial Messenger Service, and others to be announced.  KSAN played an important part in making these groups famous by featuring and celebrating their music.
