BamMagazine.com Managing Editor Kenny Wardell, Publisher Dennis Erokan and your Crustacean / DJ converged during the sound checks at the ornate room on the main floor to record an interview with Pegi Young, and possibly Stephen Stills. He’d already completed his sound check and had gone out for dinner.
We arrived early, Kenny with questions prepped for Pegi and a brand new ZOOM H-1 Recorder in hand. We literally had just taken it out of the box and figured out how to work it when Pegi came over to our table. You can hear that at the beginning of the interview as Pegi sits down. Right before the show began, in walked Wavy Gravy being escorted by Michelle Esrick the Producer / Director of the Wavy Gravy Film: Saint Misbehavin’ – which has just been released on DVD. When I saw them enter the hall, I knew Wavy would need a seat, his 75 year old frame supported by a cane, so I held two for them at our table. Wavy and Michelle went backstage to say hello but came right back out. Apparently Stephen Stills was in his tour bus by that time, and according to Mr. Gravy, taking a pre-show nap.
The building, like Wavy, is part of San Francisco Music History, once having housed Chet Helms’ Avalon Ballroom. People kept asking me all night, Michelle included, if this ornate room was the place. Actually, the Avalon was underneath, with the entrance on Sutter rather than Van Ness. Both served some time as movie theaters. The show was great (set lists below). Pegi and her excellent band were joined by her Husband and Bridge School Concert co-producer Neil Young on the song from the new Bracing For Impact release that he wrote, “Dog House,” and Pegi sang back-up with Stephen when they played the title track from the 1976 Stills-Young Band album, “Long May You Run.” When the second set ended, Wavy Gravy, Michelle and I went backstage. Wavy chatted with his old friend Stephen, and Michelle handed him a DVD of the Wavy Gravy Movie. Out of the cramped dressing room, Stephen Stills handed out some of his clothes on a hanger, and since I was standing outside in the hall, I passed it along to one of his road managers. That was the closest we came to an interview, and I promise nothing is missing from his pockets.
Going down the street with Michelle to bail out the car at the Holiday Inn garage while Wavy waited in the Regency lobby, resting his bad back in a chair, was an adventure in itself. Suffice it to say, I was glad Wavy did not have to clear the hurdles with us, and after walking him out to the curb, I pointed them towards the Bay Bridge and sent them on their way.
