Metallica Featured in Bam Friday Flashback!

For San Francisco Bay Area heavy metal fans, we just found a couple of discs containing my photos of Metallica taken at San Quentin Prison in 2003! I was working at KTVU Channel 2 at the time as Publicity and PR Director and these photos were used for the station’s newscast that day but have never been published before now.

Metallica’s singer/guitarist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, drummer Lars Ulrich, and bass guitar player Robert Trujillo worked hard in putting together a concert for the 3000 hard core inmates at San Quentin State Prison for men located in Marin County just north of San Francisco. San Quentin is the oldest prison in California.

To be honest, it was pretty scary being on the same field with the incarcerated men at San Quentin that day. A look at these guys told you right away that they were big trouble. For the most part the prisoners were there to have fun that day. How often do you get a band like Metallica come into a hard-core prison like San Quentin to play music for you?
